By taking collective action, academics can have far more influence on governments, other powerful actors and public opinion than they currently have. Simply coordinating their teaching on some aspect of climate change during GCCW would be a significant news story, as nothing like this has ever been done before. This will give academics a new opportunity to explain to students, the media, and others why much more needs to be done to combat climate change. More importantly, the focus provided by GCCW will help mobilize academics and others to take further forms of action. The precise nature of these activities is left open in order to allow space for local initiative and because different activities will be appropriate in different places. However, a central place will be given to activities aimed at ‘changing the game’ in relation to climate change, such as litigation strategies and campaigns aimed at divestment from fossil fuels.
